The email subject line read “Beer + Shopping + Food + Fun = Awesome." No need to convince me any further, I was there. Where? The 5th Annual Holiday Indie Mart at the Speakeasy Brewery in San Francisco put on in partnership with The Bold Italic. Stocked with 45 vendors selling an array of locally made items, the Holiday Indie Mart is the perfect one-stop shop for thoughtful holiday gifts, flavorful beer and an awesome time.
We arrived around 2:30 p.m. on a recent Saturday and the place was packed—in a good way. The thirtysomething crowd of indie fashionistas and plaid-wearing folk overflowed from the brewery and took advantage of the food trucks, pop up beauty shop, booth after booth of creative, handmade goods, and, of course, delicious beer. A DJ spun tunes, the air smelled of fermenting brew and “Dirty Santa” made his way through the crowd for photos. San Francisco locals even had the benefit of hopping on a school bus shuttle that stopped throughout the city and took them to and from the event.

Started years ago out of the shared backyard of San Francisco’s DIY darling and genuine sweetheart Kelly Malone, Indie Mart is now a major event held at various times throughout the year. It’s accurately described on the Indie Mart website as "One of the most beloved shopping events for SF’s DIY set. Offering an eclectic mix of local designers, vintage, unique finds, live art & silk screening, hot plates, cold beers, and stiff drinks, Indie Mart is all about DIY, loud rawk decibels, local folks and a good time. And it’s never quite the same.”

When not organizing, creating, and pulling off one of the coolest events in the city, Malone can be found running Workshop, a space that offers affordable DIY classes to the public taught by the fabulous, creative folks from the Indie Mart, local designers, and Malone herself. They teach everything from sewing to tea blending to letterpress printing and power tool using.
