For those living in the Bay Area, one of the most reputable boutiques in the area is Cameron Marks, a highly-curated modern store on the Westside of Santa Cruz. In fact, the boutique has become so popular that a second storefront opened earlier this year. Owner Vanessa Ambrose hails from Australia and brings a worldly, eclectic flair to the style found in her beautifully designed brick and mortar shops. Unarguably, you'll always find something you want to buy when you're visiting. Coming up on The Penny Rose, Ambrose will be contributing a monthly column called, "The Curator," where she will pick out several favorite items in fashion, design, and culture each month. For the time being, learn more about her below.
How would you describe your personal style?
Feminine meets a little tomboy, bohemian, eclectic, with a certain amount of comfort always in mind.
What’s your favorite brand of denim?
DL1961 are my favorite skinny jeans, with a four-way stretch that won't bag out on you—a vital point! And Imogen + Willie.
What fashion designer (or beauty brand) are you eyeing right now?
Chloe, Something Else by Natalie Wood, We are Handsome swimwear, and the organic beauty and makeup line ILIA that we are about to bring in store.
What’s your favorite skin care item?
New Mexico Lavender Salve by Second Bloom Goat Farm. I found it on a recent trip to Santa Fe. For face and dry hands, it's the best ever.
What fashion tip would you give to someone for the upcoming season?
Be adventurous with more color in your wardrobe. Offbeat combinations, too, and colors that you wouldn't usually put together; go ahead and go for it.
If money were no object, what spa or beauty treatment/service would you be addicted to?
Weekly massages at Esalen in Big Sur from my favorite massage therapist Kelly Spellman.
On occasions where you need to get ready in a rush, what is your quick ‘n’ easy beauty routine?
I find that eye makeup left on from the night before often looks better the next day for some reason. Touch it up a little and go.
What is the most unusual or surprising beauty product in your arsenal?
Indian Dabar essential oil that I order from the Purple People in the Ozark Mountains of Arizona. The natural fragrance is out of this world. A little dab goes a long long way and the amazing scent stays around for days.
What beauty products would we find in your purse?
Always a pot of hand cream of some kind. At the moment I'm carrying around Diptyque hand balm. Also mascara, one lipstick, and a lip pencil.
You’re traveling, and can only bring one bag: what favorite beauty/fashion items stay home, and what must go with?
First off, I change out my handbag. My everyday hefty leather handbag definitely stays at home. Either my "Cook & Gates" light weight canvas tie dye tote, or my Baggu canvas backpack takes it place. Regardless of the destination, a pair of Ash high tops, my Malia Mills bikini, and a bottle of Juniper Ridge shower gel always comes with.
Mani or pedi?
Pedi always, mani sometimes.
Lip gloss or lip balm?
Neither. I love a bit of lippie (Australian for lipstick).
Heels or flats?
Always heels for going out and flats mostly these days running back and forth between the two stores.
