Style Setter: Olivia Palermo

In my book, Olivia Palermo can do no wrong. Her sense of style is absolutely impeccable; always on trend without appearing to try too hard. The socialite loves pairing classic pieces with the items of the moment. She did exactly this while in Paris recently; wearing a simple white skirt with these fantastic cutout heels and an electric blue bag. The sparkly belt is also totally awesome and adds something unexpected to the outfit. Love Olivia’s look as well? Here are my favorite pieces you can grab to recreate her look.

The Jumpsuit

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7

Often by this point in the season, I find myself getting bored with my summer wardrobe. During the winter I can layer on scarves, jackets, and hats to change up my pieces, making them look different. But, once summer arrives, it’s too hot to wear more than one item at a time so, my creating versatility in my closet becomes a challenge. That’s why I love the jumpsuit trend this summer; it’s a fresh look and a great alternative to the classic sundress. The new silhouettes are nothing like they looked in the '80s and I have found them extremely flattering. My favorite jumpsuits have a tapered skinny leg and are fitted at the smallest part of the waist which makes any girl look like they have an hourglass figure. This is the perfect trend for a date night or special occasion and the best part is, they feel like you are wearing pajamas! How can you go wrong? Take a break from your favorite sundress and slip into a jumpsuit for a quick change-up this summer.

Meet Jamie Peterson: Blogger

Blogger Jamie Peterson recently became a new addition at The Penny Rose. Her contributions to the blog have been exciting, newsworthy, and on trend. Peterson also manages her own online fashion journal at (Check it out, it's a great read!) To introduce her to readers, we devised a fun Q&A.

How would you describe your personal style?
I love to mix styles and trends.  I think the best outfits layer many different patterns and fabrics with something unexpected. Lately I’ve been drawn towards classic pieces that have a rock 'n' roll edge. This season, leather and distressed denim will give your outfit an instant dose of cool.

What’s your favorite brand of denim?
My go to brands are Mother, JBrand and Paige. Denim for me is always worth the extra money; I think it's better to have one or two nice pairs of jeans that fit you super well than to have a closet full of denim that doesn’t flatter you like it should.

What fashion designer (or beauty brand) are you eyeing right now?
Rachel Zoe has done an amazing job of transitioning from celeb stylist to fashion designer. Her collection is stunning and represents her iconic style. Many of the pieces are things you can wear for a lifetime. There is a pair of green leather shorts that I am obsessing over. And the shoes, oh the shoes, are, in the words of Rachel “maje!”

What’s your favorite skin care item?
My Clarisonic Mia, it has changed my skin completely and I hope I never have to live without it!

What fashion tip would you give to someone for the upcoming season?
Take a risk or two and buy something you usually wouldn’t. If you normally wear solids, try a great black and white striped top or dress. Mix up your shorter skirts and dresses for a maxi or mid-length, or try a fun pair of patterned shorts.

If money were no object, what spa or beauty treatment/service would you be addicted to?
I love a good spray tan; if you can’t tone it, tan it!

On occasions where you need to get ready in a rush, what is your quick ‘n’ easy beauty routine?
I’m a makeup lover and I look forward to putting on all my fun products every morning.  When I don’t have a ton of time I still like to do something to camouflage my exhaustion. I love Bobbi Brown BB cream, MAC Mineralize powder, Nars Orgasm blush, Nars Eyeliner, and Cover Girl Lash Blast. I can throw these on in about five minutes and it takes me from looking tired and pale to totally awake.

What is the most unusual or surprising beauty product in your arsenal?
I wear $6 foundation. My secret weapon is Maybelline Fit. This foundation has great coverage but looks so natural. I use the 220 shade and I’m obsessed.

What beauty products would we find in your purse?
MAC Lipgloss and sunscreen. I like to wear primer on my face during the day so I don’t have to reapply while I’m out and about.

You’re traveling, and can only bring one bag: what favorite beauty/fashion items stay home, and what must go with?
My motto when traveling is “light and tight” so I only bring the essentials.

  1. One pair of heels and one pair of flats
  2. One pair of dark jeans
  3. One dress that can be casual or fancy
  4. A few tops that can mix and match
  5. One denim shirt
  6. One light jacket
  7. Lots of jewelry and some scarves and two belts (usually brown and leopard)

Mani or pedi?
Mani, people always look at your hands so they should be pretty.

Lip gloss or lip balm?
I never leave home without my lip gloss.

Heels or flats?
Heels have always been my first choice. Anything that makes me look taller and skinner is a plus in my book.  However, I have grown to love a cute flat as well now that I’m chasing after my little guy all the time.

Sleep Tight

Snooze In Style

I must admit that when it comes to the end of the day, I am totally exhausted. Many days I’ve been chasing after my little guy and attempting to work at the same time, usually in a less than comfortable outfit. Once I am ready to slip into my PJs, the last thing on my mind is looking stylish.  I grab the first item I see which is most likely my Victoria’s Secret sweats and a worn out T-shirt.

A few days ago, I was cruising around Anthropologie and I was struck by all the beautiful sleepwear they have: lots of gorgeous prints in oh-so-soft fabrics. I quickly realized that it was time to upgrade my snoozing style.  Just because I want to be comfy does not mean I have to wear sweats to bed, waking up looking and feeling very un-chic. On the other hand, my quest to go to sleep looking stylish does not mean I must sleep in confining and impractical lingerie.  There are some beautiful sleepwear sets that actually accomplish both. I’m pretty sure sleeping in that gorgeous printed caftan would be a dream; I just may never want to get out of bed!

Swimwear Season

 2013 Swim Trends

Ready or not, summer is on its way and there's nothing we can do to stop it. I always welcome this new season with mixed emotions. During the winter, I dream of days soaking up the sun on the lake and sinking my toes into the warm sand. When the hot weather actually arrives, I instantly realize it means one thing, swimsuit season. I must admit that I don't particularly enjoy being in a swimsuit. However, my love for fashion and all things cute takes over when I see the amazing new swim styles in stores.

Here’s the good news: skimpy bikinis are not the only option anymore.  I love the chic one pieces and high waisted suits this year. If you just had a baby or are a tad bit self-conscious of your mid-section, these looks are the perfect choice. When it comes to buying swimwear, my No. 1 rule is to ignore the size, get what fits you best. No one can see the tag so make sure the bottoms sit nicely on your hips and the top gives you the proper support, even if this means sizing up.

I am obsessed with the fabulous swimwear that retailers are showing for summer; trends from the runways are translating into some gorgeous suits. There is a huge '60s influence from color blocking and floral to high waisted suits. I fully intend on adding at least a few of these great pieces to my collection this year.
