Dermatologist Recommendation: Amlactin

A while back, I visited my dermatologist for a slew of things: acne check up (doing well!), and what were those annoying red bumps (Keratosis Pilaris) on the back of my arms? He suggested I try an over-the-counter lotion called Amlactin for my arms.

Keratosis Pilaris is a genetic condition that is said to affect about 40 percent of adults. It's the result of a build up of a protein called keratin, which clogs up hair follicles, thus resulting in red bumps. It's not contagious, it doesn't hurt, and it doesn't cause any problems. It's just, well, unsightly. With swimsuit season coming, I will have to face the inevitable and bare my arms. So, I finally decided to try out my dermatologist's recommendation and try Amlactin, which I've been using regularly now for seven weeks.

The results: the red bumps have severely faded and my skin texture (which used to be bumpy and coarse) is now on its way to feeling smooth. The science: Amlactin is infused with lactic acid, which works to draw water to the skin and keep it highly moisturized, thus undoing the drying effect of Keratosis Pilaris.

Not only is Amlactin dermatologist recommended, but it's The Penny Rose approved. Find out more about the product at amlactin.com. (And, there's a lotion option for dry, scaly feet, which works wonders on tired soles.)

Not-so-lovely Lady Bumps

Fergie sings about Lovely Lady Lumps, but for those of us who struggle with not-so-lovely bumps on the backside of our arms, and sometimes on our thighs, we aren’t singing. These bumps are the result of an un-curable skin condition called Keratosis Pilaris. My dermatologist explained to me that it’s actually hereditary. If you have KP, these bumps won't go away no matter how much you scrub at them. Even though it’s an un-curable situation, you can keep those pesky bumps at bay by using a few choice products that genuinely work—if you use them regularly. KP is caused by blocked hair follicles. So here are a few products that will help clear things up for you: AmLactin, an over-the-counter moisturizer that helps significantly; DERMAdoctor KP Duty Dry Skin Repair Kit; Papaya Body Lotion by Mario Badescu; and A.H.A. Botanical Body Soap by Mario Badescu. Good luck, and say good-bye to your lady bumps.
