Discovery of the Week: Fail Jewelry

I discovered Fail Jewelry a few months ago when The Penny Rose did our spring photo shoot and used jewelry from Cameron Marks, a boutique in Santa Cruz. I sincerely fell for this minimalistic, stunning line of brass and gold earrings. I purchased the top middle pair of rectangular hoops for a friend for her recent birthday and the report came back to me that she's been wearing them every day due to their versatility. Right now, I'm eyeing every pair in this collection and adding them all to my wishlist.

Discovery of the Week: Rebecca Mir Grady Jewelry

I love almost all jewelry, but I have a soft spot for minimalistic metal work. It's striking and can be worn everyday. Recently, I discovered the work of Rebecca Mir Grady, a Chicago jeweler who launched her line last year. The Penny Rose caught up with the artist to learn more about her line.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your work and your typical customer?

I’m interested in simplicity. The collection is full of geometric shapes and textures are hammered and carved into the pieces. The designs reference landscapes and rock formations, and the shapes of wings and arrows. My work appeals to folks who want to wear jewelry everyday—dressing it up and down.

What kinds of materials (metals, etc.) do you work in?

Primarily recycled sterling silver, 14 karat gold and brass.

What’s your favorite brand of denim?

I’ve really been wearing out my Madewell jeans this year—faded blue denim for everyday in the studio and white pinstripe for going out.

What fashion designer (or beauty brand) are you eyeing right now?

Margaret Howell, Won Hundred.

What’s your favorite skin care item?

Mountain Ocean’s Skin Trip lotion.

On occasions when you need to get ready in a rush, what is your quick ‘n’ easy beauty routine?

For days in the studio, I don’t bother with makeup. Just face lotion with a little SPF in it, and a little cream to tame my hair, and I’m done.

What is the most unusual or surprising beauty product in your arsenal?

Burt’s Bees has an awesome blemish stick full of natural oils. I carry it around just in case.

You’re traveling, and can only bring one bag: what favorite beauty/fashion items stay home, and what must go with?

I always bring Kevin Murphy Easy Rider hair cream, Aveeno face lotion, Kanebo Sensai concealer stick, face wash and blue eyeshadow.

Mani or pedi?

Pedi—I work with my hands all day so manicures never last. I like getting a pedi before heading to the beach in the summer.

Lip gloss or lip balm?

Lip balm.

Heels or flats?

Boots. And clogs!

Jewelry Report: Bandelier Jewelry

Recently, when browsing a few of my favorite online shopping destinations, (Mill, Mohawk General Store, Need Supply), I kept seeing the work of Andria Crescioni, a Los Angeles-based jewelry designer. And, I've completely fallen for her line, Bandelier. Using leather and metal as her materials, her work is sculptural, modern, simple, and striking. I'd wear any piece here and could pair any of these necklaces with most anything in my closet. They can lean toward an edgy look, or work as a statement piece with a neutral palette.

The pieces: Leather Ritual Necklace in Natural (upper left), Logan Necklace (upper right), Kiva Necklace in Natural (lower right), Circuit Necklace in Black (lower left).
