I've always loved tartan for autumn because of its history and versatility. But checks, houndstooth, buffalo, ombre, and windowpane plaids have all settled in as graphic options as well. This fall I'm loving plaid as:
1. A statement coat or cape. It's much more fun than the standard issue black, grey, or navy. Whenever I wear my vintage oversize buffalo check jacket I always get compliments.
2. A head to toe look. This is easily accomplished when you play with size and scale and keep the colors in the same family.
3. A new take on the school girl skirt. This one with a scalloped edge is sweet without being saccharine. Wear it to the office with a button up silk blouse for a more conservative look then dress it down on the weekend with sneakers and a drapey sweater. It works for date night, too, with the addition of a top with sparkle and your favorite heels.
4. Accessories. Everyone knows they make the outfit so you might as well have a little fun with yours.
