Discovery of the Week: Bizu Jewelry

I recently did a fall photo shoot for The Penny Rose where I modeled a necklace that I can't stop thinking about. That's a good thing, because when you really fall for a piece of jewelry, you know that if you purchase it, you'll never stop wearing it. I'm saving up for this one—the Horizon Necklace (top left, in peach) from Bizu Jewelry, a line from Megan McKean out of Portland, Ore.

Sold for $105 both online and at Stripe, a lifestyle boutique in Santa Cruz, Calif., this modern jewelry has a unique, creative flair. Combining glass beads, fabric, and metal together, McKean has created a line that I just can't stop look at. Above are four of my favorites.

Discovery of the Week: Ara Handbags

This summer I had a whirlwind shopping adventure in Portland where I stopped in at a bunch of beloved boutiques and discovered some new fashion and accessories lines. Among my favorites was a stop at West End Select Shop, a darling, stylish boutique in the heart of the Southwest/downtown shopping hub. There, I discovered Ara Handbags—a Portland-based line of bags that I couldn't stop looking at.

Hand-made with buttery soft leather in neutral colors, these versatile bags will take you easily from day to night. With a creative but straight-forward design, you'll only need one bag moving forward. Make it an Ara Handbag.

Portland Adventures: Orn Hansen

This summer I took a road trip and one of my destinations included a 24-hour whirlwind shopping trip in Portland. While there, I checked out a bunch of shops on my "must-visit" list. But there was one store in particular that I loved so much I visited it twice: Orn Hansen. This exquisitely-curated store is one of my new, all-time favorites. Owned by husband-and-wife Rob and Rodellee, it's a "one stop shop for men and women who have an appreciation for a clean but lived in aesthetic." With a particular affinity for American-made clothing, and Japanese and French items, this store is a place you can't get enough of. If you're in Portland, you must swing by and tell them The Penny Rose sent you. And if you can't get there, be sure to visit them online at Here's a peek into what makes this store such a success: an interview with the owners, Rob and Rodellee.

How long have you two owned/operated Orn Hansen?

We opened Orn Hansen in the original location in Long Beach, Calif., in 2013. In March 2015, we opened Orn Hansen in Portland, Rob's hometown. The Portland clientele are great and our shop seems to fit right into the Portland market.

How would you describe the aesthetic and style of the store?

The aesthetic is simple, clean, and a bit rustic. Our shop looks a lot like our home.

What were you two doing before you opened the store?

Rob has worked in the craft beer industry for several years and has been the director of sales at Cascade Brewing Co. up until recently. Rodellee previously worked at a fashion production company in Los Angeles while running her online vintage shop, Adored Vintage.

Do you have a philosophy of any sort in owning a store?

Our philosophy is to curate well-made clothing and goods from America and around the world. We are knowledgable about our products and how they are made and want to share products we love and believe in. We strive to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and feels like family.

When customers come to visit, what are some of the most frequent comments you hear?

We often receive compliments on how well curated our shop is. Recently we had a customer come in and tell us she just wanted to live in our store. Some customers have said our shop is calming and you feel like you can take your time browsing the wares.

Top five favorite things in the store right now?

Norman Russell Japanese Herringbone Popover Shirt (Men)

Taylor Stitch Caroline Shirt (Women)

Bradley Mountain Scout Pack

Kiriko Handkerchiefs

Richer Poorer Socks (Men and Women)

Must-have for women:

The Taylor Stitch Caroline Shirt is a staple piece every woman should own. It's a feminine take on a classic men's oxford shirt in crisp white cotton or Italian denim. It can be worn year around and is absolutely timeless.

Must-have for men:

Railcar Fine Goods X023 Japanese Natural Pure Indigo Spikes Denim.

Can you tell me about the stunning clothing collaboration you have with Jill Aiko Yee?

We met Jill a couple of years ago and instantly liked the silhouettes in her collection. They have ease of movement, a sense of utility, and they are the kind of clothes we can see women wearing every day. We made a few minor changes to pieces she had in her past collection and had a lot of fun choosing fabrics, patterns, and prints that adhered to the Orn Hansen aesthetic. We are really excited to bring more Orn Hansen and Jill Aiko Yee collaboration pieces in the shop for autumn.

Orn Hansen is a must-visit store. Check it out at 2627 SE Clinton St., Portland. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

Portland Adventures: West End Select Shop

In June, I took a sweeping road trip through Oregon and Washington and along the way, I had a chance to spend a day in Portland. Beautiful city, kind people, creative energy, vibrant culture. I loved it. I also tried to take in as many boutiques as I could when I was there. Among my favorites was West End Select Shop, a darling store in the Southwest shopping area. Beautifully curated with some of my favorite designers and a bunch of new ones to keep my eye on, this store is a place that I won't forget. Lucky for me, the online shop is an active one.

Above are two of my favorite things that the store is currently offering: this jumbo wrap/scarf from Humanoid is a stunner. Use it as a cozy blanket of sorts, or throw it on and wrap creatively for a night out.

The jewelry line, One We Made Earlier, is a new favorite that I found at the shop. Blending wood beads and cord together, this fashion forward necklace (and others like it) make a bold style statement, but diverge from the traditional blogger necklaces you see everywhere.

If you're in Portland, you must visit West End Select Shop and if you can't get there, be sure to stop by online

Portland Adventures: Caravan Pacific Modern Hair Tie

During my road trip to Oregon earlier this summer, I had a chance to swing by a beloved boutique, Betsy & Iya in Portland. In addition to selling their flagship jewelry line, this darling boutique also offers a curated selection of beautiful wares including these modern hair ties. Made of brass and copper, and ranging in price from $28-$35, these hair ties take your hair from a boring pony tail to a brilliant one. (I picked up the one in the right lower corner when I was at Betsy & Iya.)

Portland designer Shannon Guirl helms Caravan Pacific, which also primarily sells innovative lighting options. Find the hair ties at Caravan Pacific online or at Betsy & Iya
