Chaminade Spa

Admittedly, I'm not very good at resting. I'm a go-go-go sort of person. But on the off chance that I take a break, the first thing I want to do (and the last thing I can usually afford) is a massage. But with the Chaminade Spa offering $25 off its spa treatments to locals on Mondays through Thursdays, it's worth shelling out my hard-earned cash to relax for an hour at the luxurious resort. And let me say up front that while this stand-out hotel/spa/recreation center is known for its high-end dining, exquisite accommodations and rustic yet beautiful grounds, there's no pretense here, and in fact, the staff treats everyone as if they are a VIP.

"In the last six months we have hosted A-list celebrities and high profile business CEOs," says Spa Supervisor Sandy Kaplan. "Some of the services received were the Muscle Ease Deep Tissue Massage, the Healthy Hands and Feet, and the Organic Seasonal Facial."

I recently had a chance to test out the Chaminade Spa's new menu of treatment offerings. (It recently re-vamped its menu and added the exclusive warm bamboo massage which can't be found anywhere else in Santa Cruz.)

Here's what I tried out: Cucumber Mint Sore Hands and Feet Treatment ($40), Warm Bamboo Massage ($170) and the Express Anti-Stress Facial ($65).

Another perk is that the Chaminade Spa is now using "green" products in all of their treatments, specializing in Eminence, an exquisite line of Hungarian organic skincare lotions, scrubs and serums. (In addition, the spa offers all natural manicures and pedicures.)

A few of the highlights during my time there: Chaminade Spa has a large locker room where you can store your belongings during your treatments. A fresh, lush robe is set aside for you to wear, as well as elegant sandals. You can take a dip in the outdoor hot tub, enjoy the steamroom or sauna, or dine from the exclusive spa menu in a private area. Before your treatment, enjoy some time sitting in the dimly lit waiting room, sipping on lemon water in a cushy chair. This area has been designated as a quiet zone. An esthetician or masseuse will accompany you to your treatment room, where you can settle into a warm layer of sheets and drop off into relaxation mode immediately. Like I mentioned, I receved the warm bamboo massage which incorporates Swedish massage techniques and is similar to a hot stone massage. It was divine. My hands were scrubbed soft, and my express facial left me glowing.

In addition to the exceptional offerings at the spa, the grounds have two hiking trails that are open to the public. A high-end dining experience is availalbe with views of the ocean and there's an outdoor fire-pit area where you can make your own smores. The dining menu features myriad choices to please any pallette. I chose the butternut squash ravioli entrée for dinner and it was by far one of the best meals I've had in Santa Cruz.

Likewise, the accommodations and other amentities are equally as luxurious. Whether you partake in a hike on the grounds, enjoy fine dining, or indulge in a spa treatment, you'll find yourself rejuvenated and relaxed at the end of your experience.
